    INTRODUCTION

    As chemical process technology becomes more complex, Chemical Engineers will need a more detailed and fundamental understanding of safety for a proper handling of a chemical process. The growth of an industry is totally dependent on technological advances. This is essentially true in the chemical industry, which is entering an Era of more complex processes: Higher pressure, more reactive chemicals, and Exotic chemistry.  More complex processes require more complex safety technology. Many industrialists even believe that the development and application of safety technology is actually a constraint on the growth of the chemical industry.

    Safety is an act of preventing accidents through the use of appropriate technologies to identify the hazards and eliminate them before an accident occurs.

    Safety in a chemical process is an act of preventing fires, explosions and accidental chemical releases in process facilities or other facilities dealing with hazardous materials, such as refineries, and oil and gas (onshore and offshore) production installations. Process safety involves the prevention of leaks, spills, equipment malfunction, over – pressures, over – temperatures, corrosion, metal fatigue and other similar conditions. Chemical plants contain a large variety of hazards. There are mechanical hazards that cause worker injuries from tripping, falling, or moving equipment. There are also chemical hazards which include fire and explosion hazards, reactivity hazards, and toxic hazards.

    Process safety generally refers to the prevention of unintentional release of chemicals, energy or other potentially dangerous materials (including steam) during the course of chemical processes that can have a serious effect to the plant and environment.

  • A report on simulation of methanol production from synthesis gas

    Abstract

     

    An innovative process scheme to produce methanol from carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide is here presented and accessed via simulation.In this configuration, the synthesis gas stream, composed by CO, CO2, and H2 and fed to the methanol synthesis reactor, is produced by means of a reverse-water–gas-shift by which a CO stream is partially converted in carbon dioxide.  A simulation model is applied to define the proper operating conditions to achieve synthesis gas composition targets. The simulation results show that the plant configuration represents a feasible way to produce methanol using carbon dioxide, competitively with the traditional process in which the synthesis gas is produced by a natural gas steam reforming unit.From the simulation, some graphs were plotted. These graphs showed the dependency of simulation on variables (temperature, pressure etc).This were useful to understand the changes that will occur if properties of each unit were changed. Since pilot plants are expensive for this type of case, HYSYS gives us an opportunity to observe and realize the plant and the process happening inside. From the plots, optimum conditions for methanol production are found to be reactor temperature 200-300oC, reactor pressure 40-50atm.

Fish farming business can be regarded as very profitable for the following reason;

    2. Low input required for production with the utilization of agricultural wastes such as animal dungs, crop residues, particularly under the integrated farming practice that ensures bio-recirculation of organic residues or waste from the farming system
    • The use of marginal land unsuitable for other agricultural uses such as swamps and marshy areas; as well as land available around residential areas where fish ponds/tanks can be sited to add value and beauty
    1. High returns from sales of fish, and
    2. Edo state is a state with high demand for fish ,with limited supply and therefore relies on importation. Expectedly aquaculture will encourage local or domestic fish production

Garri is widely known in Nigeria and other West African countries. Garri (also known as gari, garry, gali,”cassava flakes” or occasionally tapioca) is a popular West African food made from cassava tubers. It has two varieties; the white and yellow made by adding a little palm oil. Starch is a carbohydrate extracted from agricultural raw materials (e.g. Cassava) which is widely present in literally thousands of everyday food and non-food applications. Starch is the most important and common carbohydrate in the human diet that is contained in many staple foods. Starch industry extracts and refines starches from seeds, roots and tubers, by wet grinding, washing, sieving and drying. Cassava Manihot esculenta (family Euphorbiaceae) is a woody shrub native to the South Americas. It is extensively cultivated as an annual crop in tropical and subtropical regions for its edible starchy tuberous root, a major source of carbohydrates. This study examines the feasibility of carrying out a Garri and Starch production business. After subjecting this business through SWOT analysis we found that the business venture is very feasible and viable. Cassava processing into Garri and Starch should not be seen as a non-profit business and therefore people should continue to produce cassava products (garri and starch) in clean and eco-friendly ways to our own benefit and that of our nation.

    ABSTRACT

    This feasibility study was conducted to determine the viability of a fruit bar located at June 12 complexes, University of Benin, Benin City. The feasibility of the proposed enterprise was assessed in four core areas namely: market feasibility, economic feasibility, technical feasibility and financial feasibility. A market opportunity was identified for the domestic production of good quality fruit salad and fruit juice concentrates to be sold to students and lecturers alike as well as shop owners around the complex.

     

    The analysis of the financial feasibility of the proposed enterprise reveals that (based on assumptions that were made) the enterprise is potentially profitable, and it’s projected to have a healthy cash flow and is viable over the long-run. As a result of a lack in a comprehensive analysis of the current natural resources that are available in Benin, this feasibility study has made a number of assumptions regarding the environmental and/or natural resource feasibility of the enterprise.

     

    Based on the limited information it was concluded that the proposed enterprise could be environmentally feasible. Processing technology that is ideally suited to the specific technical requirements of the proposed processing enterprise at June 12 Complex, University of Benin is available. The location is ideally suited to the establishment of a Fruit Bar enterprise of this nature since it is reasonably well located with regards to resources, input supplies and access to distribution channels. Taking the net social benefit of the proposed enterprise into consideration it can be concluded that the enterprise is anticipated to be socially and institutionally feasible. Surrounding communities and businesses would benefit in a number of direct and indirect ways from the establishment of the proposed enterprise.  Based on the framework set out in this feasibility study it can be concluded that the proposed enterprise at June 12 Complex is feasible.

     

    This positive result of the feasibility analysis is, however, heavily dependent upon the assumptions made during the study and on conditions (political, environmental, economical etc.) remaining relatively stable within the enterprise’s operating environment.  If either the assumptions or the operating environment were to differ substantially from actual circumstances the actual feasibility of the enterprise at June 12 Complex could differ from the current result.

Mishaps in workplaces are fairly frequent despite the stringent laws promulgated by government to protect worker and to ensure that employers provides a safe work environment for them. Ignoring safety procedures and using poor judgement are among factors that put workers at greater risk, resulting in job-related injury or illness to a whole lot of workers world-wide every year.

    While multiple factors can contribute to an accident, usually it boils down to someone making a mistake. Employee behaviour often leads to work-place mishaps, whether they are related to improper procedures, misuse or poor maintenance of equipment, fatigue or lack of proper training

    Failing to follow safety procedures not only endanger workers but often put others at risk.  Likewise, overconfidence can affect a worker ability to make sound decisions. An employee who overestimates his ability can underestimate the risks associated with a particular action, leading to costly errors or physical harm. Taking shortcuts intended to save time or increase productivity can also cause problems. Even relatively minor mishap can come at a high price in direct and indirect costs.

    There are just as many causes of industrial accidents as there are industrial accidents. The broad category of industrial accident covers anything from small cuts and bruises to huge disaster that affects a large population of people. Approximately 120 million industrial accidents occur in work places worldwide each year. Approximately 210,000 of these accidents results in fatality. The industries which have the highest rate of accidents are the mining, construction, transportation, and agricultural industries. Construction accidents account for fifteen percent of all accidents and thirty percent of all fatalities in industrial work environments.

    Causes of industrial accidents can be broken down into two broad categories: unsafe condition and unsafe acts. The causes of industrial accident that pertain to unsafe conditions can include insufficient workplace lighting, excessive noise’, slippery or unsafe flooring, extreme temperature exposure, inadequate protection when working with machinery or hazardous materials, unstable structures, electrical problems, machine malfunction and failure and more. The causes of industrial accidents that involves unsafe acts can include actions or failure to act as at when due which result in injury, loss, or damage. This can be a result of negligence on the side of employees, employer, or a third party.

    The cause of industrial accidents can occur in the environment around the workplace, or within the work environment. External causes of industrial accidents may include fire, chemical spills, toxic gas emission or radiation. The causes of accident in these cases might include organisational conditions, natural forces, software or component failures and outside interference. Internal causes of industrial accident can involve equipment or other work related conditions, harmful materials, toxic chemical and human error.

    There are several ways a worker can get injured in the work environment. Injuries that results in the causes of industrial accidents can include any one or a combination of the following: falls, being struck by objects in motion, structure collapse, being trapped in or by an object, strenuous physical activity, exposure to extreme temperature, electrical accidents, radiation exposure, inhalation, ingestion, or absorption of harmful substances. These industrial accidents can results in a number of injuries including fractures, sprains, strains, amputation, concussion, internal injury, poisoning, infection and death.

    The causes of industrial accidents are numerous. There are several instances where employee negligence is a factor in industrial accidents. Workers compensation law protects employers from lawsuits brought against them by injured employees. There are cases where an employer may be held liable for worker injuries if they had knowledge of unsafe conditions and failed to act in order to prevent accident. Injured worker may seek compensation for their injuries from their employers or the maker of faulty or dangerous industrial products.

    The Speedcoding system was developed by John Backus for the IBM 701. The Speedcoding interpreter effectively converted the 701 to a virtual three-address floating-point calculator. The system included pseudo-instructions for the four arithmetic operations on floating-point data, as well as operations such as square root, sine, arc tangent, exponent, and logarithm. Conditional and unconditional branches and input/outputconversions were also part of the virtual architecture. It included the novel facility of automatically incrementing address registers. This facility did not appear in hardware until the UNIVAC 1107 computers of 1962. Because of such features, matrix multiplication could be done in 12 Speedcoding instructions. Backus claimed that problems that could take two weeks to program in machine code could be programmed in a few hours using Speedcoding.
