ABSTRACT

 

In this study, biodiesel was produced from crude rubber seed oil with high free fatty acid (FFA) content of about 26.1% by two step esterification. The crude oil was acid esterified using the recommendedmethanol-to-FFA molar ratio of 19.8:1 by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) without optimization studies. 5% acid catalyst was used and after the reaction was carried out for one hour, the FFA was reduced to 1.26%.the second step alkaline catalysed transesterification was carried out and factors such as oil to methanol molar ratio, catalyst concentration and reaction time were analysed and the optimal parameters were  determined to be a methanol to oil molar ratio of 7:1, 0.6%wt catalyst and reaction time of 60minutes which gave the highest biodiesel yield of 83.24%.The biodiesel produced in this work is within the limits of specification described by American standard test method. It was concluded that the use of high FFA % Rubber Seed Oil is a viable feedstock for biodiesel production and alternative to diesel fuel.
